Artist Statement

As an artist I use the medium of photography and the primary goal of my work but also my role as an artist is to provoke emotions and engage my audience to a self-exploring journey commemorating the past. My inspiration derives from the emotional aspect of traumatic experiences and the effects these have on both the human body and society. A traumatic experience is not only confined to the person who has experienced it but it is also a projection of a problematic society. Whether the main topic is religion, racism, or a personal story all of these expose a society with open wounds.

Even though I primarily use photography to project my ideas, I sometimes keep my camera on the side and resort to found footage imagery or collage to articulate my message. Different materials are used in the process, as each one adds a new meaning. I manipulate the images both digitally and with my own hands because it is there where I find the freedom to experiment more and express myself unconditionally.

The Cut

The found photos used in this project are sourced from newspapers and articles published during the 70s. They are on their own a strong documentation of their time. By using these photos, I am dealing with specific and real facts that occurred in the past. After the folding process, this realism/reality becomes totally fictional. By hiding and folding something else appears.

What do you see?

The crease signifies how close is reality with fiction and how thin the line can be between the bright and the dark side of ourselves.
